ROBERT MERRICK FROM ASHTON-UNDER-LYME CAUGHT IN HORRIFIC SEXUAL GROOMING SCHEME INVOLVING 13-YEAR-OLD SCHOOLGIRL AT HAMPSHIRE STATION
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, Robert Merrick, a 33-year-old man from Ashton-under-Lyme, was found guilty of engaging in a sinister online grooming operation that targeted a vulnerable 13-year-old girl.The incident unfolded over several months, during which Merrick used the internet to manipulate and exploit the young girl, leading to a tragic and illegal encounter.
According to court reports, Merrick initially contacted the girl through a social media platform specifically designed for users under the age of 17.
Under the false identity of Phil Hall, claiming to be 17 years old, Merrick began a persistent and calculated campaign to establish a relationship with her.
The young girl, in an act of misguided trust, sent Merrick a topless photograph of herself after he repeatedly requested explicit images, including ones of her in her school uniform.
The court heard that she was messaging him during school lessons and for extended periods, sometimes up to five hours late into the night, indicating a pattern of obsessive communication.
Over the course of four months, the online exchanges escalated, culminating in a meeting at Southampton Parkway station.
Merrick, who had been grooming her for some time, met the girl in person and provided her with a miniskirt.
Despite her clear disclosure of her age, Merrick proceeded to have sexual intercourse with her in a tent after their meeting.
The court was told that this act was the result of deliberate grooming and manipulation.
Following his arrest, police officers searched Merrick’s residence and discovered children’s clothing, further evidence of his inappropriate behavior.
The court heard that the girl’s experience had a profound psychological impact, leading her to self-harm and leaving her feeling “sick and dirty.” Merrick admitted to the charges of meeting a child after sexual grooming and engaging in sexual activity with a minor.
His actions drew widespread condemnation, and the court sentenced him to six years in prison.
Judge Derwin Hope emphasized that Merrick had intentionally targeted a young girl with false personal details, causing her significant emotional and psychological harm.
The judge also noted the deeply entrenched pattern of offending and acknowledged Merrick’s admission that he needed specialist help.
In addition to his prison sentence, Merrick’s license was extended to eight years, and he was placed on the sex offenders’ register.
He was also banned from contacting, speaking to, or being in the vicinity of anyone under 18 unless accompanied by an adult or with parental permission.
These restrictions are set to remain in place indefinitely, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
