In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Gunness, Robert McClurey, aged 35, faced the full weight of justice at Derby Crown Court after a series of heinous crimes. McClurey, a resident of Station Road in Gunness, pleaded guilty to a total of thirteen serious charges, including eight counts of rape, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of possessing indecent photographs of a child. Additionally, he was found guilty of one count of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault, bringing to light a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.Following the court proceedings, Judge handed down a substantial sentence of 22 years in prison for McClurey. Of this term, he is required to serve 17 years behind bars, with an extended five-year period of supervision and monitoring after his release. The sentencing marked a significant moment in the pursuit of justice for the victims, whose lives had been profoundly affected by McClurey's actions.
Detective Constable Shani Clark, who led the investigation on behalf of Humberside Police, expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, describing the sentence as 'tremendous for the victims and their families.' She emphasized the severity of McClurey's crimes, stating, 'McClurey is a sexual predator and a bully, who systematically abused his victims over a long period of time.'
The investigation into McClurey's offenses began in February 2014, after reports of his misconduct surfaced. The case culminated in his guilty plea during a court trial in June of the previous year, sparing the victims the ordeal of testifying in court. Prior to this, McClurey had denied the allegations, prolonging the emotional distress for those affected and adding to the trauma of the case.
Detective Clark highlighted the importance of the sentence, noting that it reflects the gravity of McClurey's offending. She also issued a stern warning to others who might consider similar actions, stating, 'This sentence serves as a warning that those who commit such crimes will be identified, prosecuted, and brought to justice.' The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat sexual violence and protect vulnerable individuals within the community of Gunness and beyond.
