WIGSTON RAPIST SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS
A man named Robert Halliday, previously of South Street, Oakham, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for twice raping a drunken woman near a cemetery in Wigston. The victim, in her 40s, was so traumatized by the incident that she later attempted to overdose.
Halliday, aged 41, drove the victim from Leicester city center to a secluded area close to a cemetery and subjected her to a degrading assault.
The court heard that Halliday lured the woman into his Ford Focus after she mistook him for a taxi driver.
Once there, he raped her twice amid her protests.
Afterwards, he drove her to McDonald's in Wigston, abandoned her, and showed awareness of police activity by driving past the scene multiple times.
He was arrested later that day.
During the trial, it was revealed that Halliday had a similar incident in Nottingham in 2015, but charges were not prosecuted.
The judge described Halliday as someone who planned to target vulnerable women and found that he posed a substantial risk of harm in the future.
Halliday was also given an extension of seven years to his license period.
The victim expressed relief at his incarceration, stating, 'Justice has been done and a dangerous man is now off the streets.'
