ROBERT GRANT OF BRAISHFIELD SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENCES IN SOUTHAMPTON
In December 2010, a pensioner from Braishfield was sentenced to nine years in prison for a series of historic sexual offences.The case arose when a teenager wrote to a magazine seeking advice, revealing that she was suffering from sexual abuse. Her mother happened to come across the letter and, upon confronting her daughter, the girl made serious allegations against Robert Grant.
Faced with these accusations, Grant, aged 71 and residing on Blackthorn Close, Braishfield, immediately confessed to the crimes.
During the trial at Southampton Crown Court, Grant pled guilty to two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault, and one count each of indecency with a child and indecent assault.
Judge Patrick Hooton remarked that he took into consideration that Grant had admitted the offences at the earliest opportunity but noted that his actions had caused "untold anguish".
In mitigation, David Jenkins commented on behalf of Grant, stating that the accused accepted full responsibility and acknowledged that it was entirely his own fault.
