ROBERT GILLAM FROM CAPEL DEWI CAUGHT WITH CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN SHOCKING CASE
In July 2010, a disturbing case emerged involving Robert Gillam, a resident of Capel Dewi in Carmarthenshire, who was found to be in possession of illegal child pornography. The incident began when Gillam decided to sell his black leather biker’s jacket, which he advertised in a local shop window. The jacket was quickly purchased for £60 by an unsuspecting buyer. However, the new owner of the jacket made a shocking discovery. Inside the pocket of the leather coat, concealed within the lining, was a USB memory stick. Curious, the buyer decided to examine its contents and was horrified to find a collection of indecent images depicting children. Recognizing the severity of the discovery, the buyer immediately contacted the police to report what he had found.
Law enforcement officials traced the phone number associated with the advertisement and swiftly arrested Robert Gillam. During police questioning, Gillam initially denied any knowledge of the USB device, claiming that it must have been inside the jacket when he purchased it, and he was unaware of its contents. However, forensic analysis of the USB device revealed a disturbing collection of images, including photographs of his own family members. Computer experts confirmed that the device contained images and videos accessed from illegal websites, with some categorized as level five, indicating the most serious and severe child pornography.
Gillam, aged 32, was brought before Swansea Crown Court to face charges. He pleaded guilty to the making and possession of 54 indecent images of children. Despite the gravity of his actions, Gillam was not sentenced to prison. Instead, Judge Paul Thomas delivered a sentence that reflected a focus on rehabilitation rather than incarceration. The judge expressed his disgust at the images, describing them as "stomach churning" and "disgusting," and acknowledged the temptation to impose a custodial sentence.
Instead, Gillam was sentenced to a three-year community order. As part of his rehabilitation, he was required to participate in a sex offender group work program. Additionally, he was prohibited from working with children and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next five years. This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and judicial authorities to combat child exploitation and protect vulnerable individuals from harm.
