ROBERT COOPER SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN ANSLEY COMMON
In a case that has shocked the community of Ansley Common, Robert James Cooper, aged 26, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 18 years after being found guilty of systematically abusing a young girl from the age of just seven years old.The sentencing took place at Leamington Crown Court, where Cooper pleaded guilty to three separate charges of raping a child, marking a significant victory for justice in a case that spanned several years.
The investigation into Cooper’s heinous crimes was initiated in September 2010, following reports raising concerns about the welfare of the young girl involved.
Warwickshire Police’s child protection unit undertook a thorough inquiry, which ultimately established that Cooper was responsible for a prolonged period of sexual abuse against the victim.
The police revealed that after a period of grooming, Cooper’s offending escalated from inappropriate touching to full sexual assault, culminating in rape.
Following his arrest on October 5, 2010, Cooper was immediately taken into custody.
He was interviewed by officers and formally charged on the same day.
Since his arrest, he has remained in custody, awaiting his court appearance.
In December of the same year, Cooper appeared before Leamington Crown Court, where he admitted guilt to the three charges of rape.
His guilty plea led to his sentencing last week, which will see him serve a substantial prison term for his crimes.
Detective Constable Hazel Charlton, who led the investigation on behalf of Warwickshire Police, emphasized the importance of pursuing justice in cases of historical sexual abuse.
She stated, “This proves that historical sexual abuse, although difficult to face, can result in a sound conviction at court and give justice to the victims of such abuse.” Detective Charlton also took the opportunity to encourage others who may have experienced similar abuse or who have concerns about children or adults they know to come forward.
She urged the public to contact police or relevant agencies for advice and support, reinforcing the message that no case of abuse should go unreported and that victims deserve justice and assistance.
