STOKESLEY MAN JAILED FOR STABBING GRANDFATHER IN VIOLENT ATTACK
A 20-year-old man from Stokesley has been convicted of a violent assault after he attacked a grandfather in an incident outside the victim's daughter's home.The court heard that Riley Bulman stabbed the man in the back and stomach during an altercation last year, leaving him with a punctured lung that required emergency surgery.
Prosecutor Ellen Wright described the attack, stating, "Bulman described the situation as all kicking off, and when the victim tried to intervene, he was attacked and received a stab wound." She added that Bulman was found guilty of wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article, with the incident resulting in the victim suffering a life-threatening injury.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of the attack, noting that Bulman had previously been convicted and had a history of violence.
Bulman pleaded guilty at trial and was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
The incident occurred in February last year at the victim’s home in Stokesley, where Bulman arrived and became involved in a physical confrontation that escalated quickly.
During the fight, Bulman produced a knife from his clothing and stabbed the man in the back and stomach, which led to internal injuries including a punctured lung that required immediate surgical intervention.
Witnesses described seeing Bulman take a 3-4 inch blade from his pocket and stabbing the victim without provocation.
After the attack, Bulman fled the scene but was later apprehended by police officers, who also recovered the knife and other evidence of the assault.
The court considered his previous criminal record, which includes other violent offences, and handed him a four-year prison term, with a recommendation for strict supervision upon release.
The court also acknowledged the trauma suffered by the victim, who remains hospitalised and continues ongoing treatment.
This violent act has shocked the community and reinforced the need for strict sentencing for violent offenders.
