PRISON SENTENCE FOR MAN WHO HOARDED THOUSANDS OF CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
A man from Canterbury involved in a sex offense has received a prison sentence after authorities uncovered thousands of indecent images of minors.Investigation Details The case was initiated in July 2024 when police officers conducted a visit to Richard Mumford's residence in St Mary’s Gardens, Canterbury.
As part of routine checks on the 40-year-old, who was registered as a sex offender, officers discovered illegal images on multiple electronic devices during their visits.
Further examination revealed attempts by Mumford to erase his browsing history.
He faced 16 charges, which included creating and possessing indecent images of children, as well as possessing bladed weapons—two swords—found during a search.
Mumford appeared before Margate Magistrates' Court on September 4, 2025, and pleaded guilty to all the charges.
Extent of the Images Officers identified a total of 7,193 indecent and prohibited images of minors, with some depicting children as young as three years old.
A significant portion, 1,350 images, were classified as the most severe category.
On March 18, 2026, at Canterbury Crown Court, Mumford was handed a sentence of 28 months in prison.
