MAN, 80, JAILED FOR CHILD RAPE
2026-06-18 13:28: A man accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a child over 40 years ago has been sentenced to jail.Sussex Police confirmed that Richard Beacher of Cox Green, Rudgwick, faced nine charges relating to crimes committed from 1978 to 1986, during which the girl was aged between three and eight.
The 80-year-old, a British citizen, was given an 18-year sentence at Hove Crown Court on June 8, after his initial sentence of 24 years was reduced because he pleaded guilty.
The victim notified police in 2021 and received assistance from specialist officers as an investigation was conducted.
Detective Sophie Williams stated: "This is a profoundly disturbing case, where the victim was subjected to extensive and vile sexual abuse starting at just three years old.
We are thankful for the courage shown by the victim and witnesses, which was essential for bringing about justice.
Sussex Police remains committed to fighting for justice and protecting victims.
This case demonstrates that even decades later, perpetrators can be held accountable." A police representative added: “Sussex Police is dedicated to helping women feel safe.

Richard Beacher, residing in Rudgwick, West Sussex, faced charges related to nine separate incidents that took place between 1978 and 1986, during which the girl was aged three to eight.
The victim came forward and reported the incidents to police in 2021.
Beacher admitted to one count of rape, four counts of indecent assault, and four counts of gross indecency.
He was sentenced at Hove Crown Court to a term of 18 years in custody.
His original sentence of 24 years was reduced following his guilty plea.
