RHYS CHRISTOPHER FROM TRALLWN FOUND GUILTY OF ATTEMPTED SEXUAL ASSAULT IN MERTHYR TYDFIL
In a case that has drawn significant attention in the local community, Rhys Christopher, an 18-year-old resident of Bonvilston Road in Trallwn, was subjected to a court trial at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court concerning serious allegations involving a 12-year-old girl. The proceedings revealed a complex and troubling series of events that took place between October 31, 2010, and January 17, 2011.Rhys Christopher faced multiple charges, including two counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13 and one count of assaulting a child under 13 by penetration. However, after careful deliberation, the jury—comprising six men and six women—returned a verdict that was both nuanced and significant. They acquitted him of all three original charges but found him guilty of attempted sexual assault of a child under 13, which was considered an alternative to the original charge of sexual assault.
The prosecution, led by Suzanne Thomas, presented evidence suggesting that the 12-year-old girl had been subjected to a campaign of physical and sexual abuse by Christopher. It was alleged that he had engaged in inappropriate and explicit communication with the young girl, which included sending her sexually suggestive messages. These messages, some of which were discovered by her mother, formed a central part of the case against him.
Throughout the trial, Christopher maintained his innocence, denying all allegations. He claimed that the explicit messages exchanged were merely a joke and that he had no intention of any real harm. He insisted that the messages were sent in response to the girl’s own messages to him, implying a mutual, if inappropriate, exchange. When questioned about the nature of his messages and their inappropriateness, Christopher repeatedly stated, “I didn’t do it. It was all a joke. I knew nothing would come of it.”
Despite his denials, the court was informed that Christopher would be required to sign the sex offender register, a standard procedure for individuals convicted of such offenses. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Trallwn and highlights the ongoing issues surrounding the protection of minors and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding children from exploitation and abuse.
