RHYS ANDERSON CONVICTED IN PLYMOUTH FOR CRUEL ATTACK ON GULL CHICK
Rhys Anderson, born around 2000 and residing on Kensington Road, Greenbank, Plymouth PL4, was involved in a shocking act of cruelty against a defenseless herring gull chick. In July 2019, Anderson was recorded on CCTV severely damaging the chick, which he and an unidentified accomplice were seen laughing manically during the attack. Anderson first caught the young gull, then threw it into the air, kicked it, and ultimately beat it with a broomstick. The injured chick, named Hoppit, was rescued and cared for by Athena Wildlife & Bird of Prey Care (Rehab) in Plymouth. Despite suffering a broken leg that resulted in amputation, Hoppit appears to be adjusting well to life post-injury.
Rhys Anderson admitted to harming the gull chick in Plymouth on 10 July 2019 before Plymouth city magistrates. His sentence included a 12-month community order, 60 hours of unpaid work, and the completion of a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and a thinking skills course. Additionally, Anderson was ordered to pay £250 in compensation to Athena Wildlife & Bird of Prey Care.
This case has drawn attention to animal cruelty and the importance of protecting vulnerable wildlife in the area.
