REGINALD MASKELYNE FROM SEBASTOPOL DIES BEFORE SENTENCING IN TORFAEN CHILD SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE
In a tragic turn of events, Reginald Maskelyne, a 60-year-old resident of Springfield Road in Sebastopol, Torfaen, passed away before he could face sentencing for serious criminal charges related to the sexual assault of a child. The case had been scheduled for a court hearing on October 8, during which Maskelyne had admitted to six separate charges, including grave sexual assault and engaging in sexual activity with a minor. On the day of his trial, the defendant entered a guilty plea, prompting the court to adjourn proceedings to allow for the preparation of a pre-sentence report and a medical assessment. However, just a month later, on November 7, Maskelyne was found deceased at his residence. The death was confirmed by a death certificate submitted to Cardiff Crown Court by his legal representative, Hugh Wallace. The certificate, issued by Gwent Coroner David Bowen following a post-mortem examination, indicated that Maskelyne succumbed to multiple health issues, including ischemic heart disease, coronary heart disease, a bleeding duodenal ulcer, gastric erosion, and a urinary tract infection.
Authorities responded promptly upon the report of his death, with officers attending Maskelyne’s home after being notified. His sister-in-law, Elizabeth Maskelyne, identified him, and the police confirmed his identity during their investigation. The case had garnered attention as the victim had been interviewed by police prior to the defendant’s death. Prosecutor Michael Jones informed the court that the police had spoken to the victim, although the proceedings were ultimately halted due to Maskelyne’s death.
Judge Patrick Curran addressed the court, noting that since Maskelyne had pleaded guilty to the charges, the indictment should be officially endorsed, and the case closed. The court’s proceedings concluded with the recognition that the defendant would not face sentencing due to his untimely death, leaving the criminal case unresolved in the eyes of the law.
