75-YEAR-OLD PENSIONER CAUGHT FILMING IN PERTHSHIRE CAFÉ TOILET
A 75-year-old man named Raymond Finlay was caught filming people using a unisex toilet in a Perthshire coffee shop with a concealed camera hidden under a sink. The device was spotted by an attentive staff member around 2.22pm on August 5, 2019, at the Braco Coffee Shop located on Front Street.
The shop manager discovered the camera attached to a pipe facing the toilet with a flashing green light.
She removed the device and switched it off, subsequently handing it over to police.
Police retrieved the footage from the device's memory card, which showed Finlay setting up the camera and several individuals, including unidentified males, using the facilities in a private act.
Finlay was identified through details on his bank card used to pay for lunch at the cafe.
He was arrested at his home in Stirling on October 16, 2020, where he admitted to police, saying, "I’ve done something terrible." Finlay appeared in Perth Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to a charge of voyeurism.
He was placed on the Sex Offenders Register, and Sheriff Euan Duthie deferred sentencing until December 23, 2021.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Finlay’s bathroom at home was similar to the one in the footage, indicating he possibly did a 'dry run' before the offence.
His solicitor indicated that Finlay suffers from ill health and is anxious for the case to be resolved.
Finlay was visibly affected during police visits, and ambulance personnel were called.
The court was informed of his guilty plea and the court deferred sentencing for further consideration.
