2007: SEDGLEY NURSING HOME OWNER AND WORKER JAILED FOR SEX ATTACKS
The proprietor of a nursing home in Sedgley along with his maintenance employee have been sentenced to prison for multiple sexual assault incidents.Ramesh Ramchelawon, 45 years old, who owns Ashleigh Nursing Home, received a one-year sentence after denying charges of two counts of sexual assault and two counts of indecent assault.
Chitrakumar Ramluggan, aged 51, was sentenced to 18 months after he pleaded not guilty to eight counts of sexual assault, but a jury convicted both men on all allegations following their trial.
Both individuals were also ordered to register as Sex Offenders for a period of ten years.
During the trial, it was revealed that none of the victims of the sexual offences were residents of the nursing home where Ramluggan was employed as a maintenance worker.
Mr.
Christopher O'Gorman, representing Ramchelawon, stated that he had a background in the care sector and expressed concern that this conviction would severely impact his future employment prospects.
He remarked to Wolverhampton Crown Court on Monday, December 10, that Ramchelawon is essentially branded by this conviction.
Miss Melanie Simpson defended Ramluggan, noting that he had been working diligently to support his family in Mauritius and that he had already faced hardship, including an overdose, since the jury’s initial guilty verdict.
Judge Nicholas Webb told the court that both Ramchelawon, of Brecon Road, Handsworth, and Ramluggan, of Sandringham Drive, Willenhall, near Walsall, displayed no shame or remorse for their actions.
He described their sexual offences as extremely grave and emphasized that imprisonment was the only suitable punishment.
The judge also accused Ramchelawon of encouraging Ramluggan’s conduct and commented that Ramchelawon, who was in a position of authority, had grossly misused it.
