Small Heath Domestic Abuser
Qadir Karim, a 32-year-old resident of Burlington Road in Small Heath, has been convicted of a series of violent and controlling behaviors directed towards his partner over a period of several months. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of emotional manipulation, physical assault, and coercive control that left his partner in a state of constant fear and distress.

According to court reports, Karim exerted significant dominance over his partner by dictating her daily choices, including what she was allowed to wear, how she styled her hair and makeup, and demanding that she maintain constant communication with him. He went as far as confiscating her phone, interrogating her about her activities, and forcing her to delete her social media accounts. His monitoring extended to scrutinizing her messages, effectively stripping her of her privacy and independence. The financial abuse was also evident, as Karim extracted money from her to the point where she was left in debt, further compounding her vulnerability.

The situation escalated dramatically in October 2020, when Karim's behavior turned threatening and violent. Court evidence detailed incidents where he made explicit threats to kill her, creating an atmosphere of terror. On two specific occasions, October 13 and November 5, he physically assaulted her—slapping her, pushing her into a bush, and kicking her. Following these assaults, he sent her threatening messages, intensifying her fear and sense of helplessness.

Despite being released on bail, Karim immediately violated the conditions set by the court by re-establishing contact with his partner and issuing further threats. The court described a catalogue of aggressive acts, including grabbing her face and throat, demanding to find her second phone, and threatening to break her jaw. The judge noted that Karim's actions left his partner feeling utterly terrified, prompting her to seek refuge and safety away from him.

During the sentencing, Karim admitted to engaging in controlling and coercive behavior. He was sentenced to 27 months in prison, with the court acknowledging his remorse and shame for his actions. However, the judge emphasized the severity of his conduct and the lasting trauma inflicted upon his partner. The court recounted a particularly harrowing night, which the victim described as 'the worst night of her life,' during which Karim slapped her, grabbed her by the throat and hair, and threatened to set her home on fire. Despite his expressions of remorse, the court made it clear that his conduct was serious and warranted significant punishment to reflect the impact on his victim's well-being and safety.
