PRASAN MAHANTY CRANFORD TRAIN SEX OFFENDER CAUGHT AFTER YEARS OF EVADING JUSTICE

In a disturbing case that highlights ongoing concerns about public safety on transportation networks, Prasan Mahanty, a resident of Bath Road, Cranford, was convicted of engaging in highly inappropriate and criminal behavior aboard a busy commuter train. The incident, which took place in April 2011, involved Mahanty exposing himself and masturbating in front of two young girls aged just 12 years old, who were traveling home from school.

According to Detective Constable Andy Parkinson of the British Transport Police’s (BTP) Public Protection Unit, Mahanty boarded the train at Chislehurst station and proceeded through the carriages until he reached the section where the two young girls were seated. Without warning or consent, he sat directly opposite them, exposed himself, and began to masturbate in full view of the innocent victims. The girls, understandably shocked and distressed by his actions, quickly realized what he was doing. Recognizing the danger and the inappropriate nature of his conduct, they moved to different carriages and disembarked at the next station, seeking safety and to alert authorities.

Despite the immediate response and efforts by law enforcement, including a media appeal, house-to-house inquiries, and plainclothes surveillance, Mahanty remained at large for nearly two years. It was not until late 2013, when he was arrested on unrelated charges, that police officers recognized him and linked him to the earlier offense. This recognition was crucial in bringing him to justice.

DC Parkinson emphasized the severity of Mahanty’s actions, describing them as “repulsive” and highlighting the fact that he specifically targeted children on a crowded train for his own gratification. The lengthy delay between the offense and the conviction underscores the police’s commitment to pursuing justice, regardless of how much time has passed. The authorities’ perseverance paid off, ensuring that Mahanty faced the consequences of his behavior.

At Blackfriars Crown Court on Thursday, January 8, Mahanty pleaded guilty to two counts of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child. His sentence included a four-month prison term, suspended for two years, along with a requirement to register as a sex offender for seven years. This case is part of Project Guardian, a comprehensive initiative aimed at reducing sexual offenses and inappropriate conduct on public transport in London. The project involves collaboration between the BTP, Transport for London, the Metropolitan Police, and the City of London Police, all working together to raise awareness and encourage the public to report incidents of sexual misconduct.
