THUG SUFFOCATED PARTNER AND THREATENED TO BURN HER HOUSE DOWN

Phillip Wignall, with a known history of violence directed at women, has been imprisoned following an incident where he suffocated his former partner.

The 38-year-old appeared at Preston Crown Court and pleaded guilty to three separate counts of domestic violence committed over just a few days in December 2024.

Prosecutor Naomi Duckworth revealed that Wignall admitted to charges involving assault, suffocation, and bodily harm, with the relationship ending due to issues linked to his drug addiction, which had persisted for about two and a half years.

The court heard that on December 13, the couple was in bed when Wignall suddenly began assaulting the woman, hitting her in the head after accusing her of waking him.

He then pressed his body against her and continued to punch her, additionally covering her face with a pillow as she fought to breathe.

The victim thought she might have lost consciousness during the attack.

Wignall also caused pain and bruising by forcing her left arm behind her back.

The judge pointed out that Wignall was aware of her shoulder injury, making the pain worse.

On December 15, early in the morning, the victim was on the phone with a male friend when Wignall accused her of cheating.

He then contacted his cousin, making threats such as intending to harm her physically and laughing.

The court also learned that Wignall threatened to set her house on fire with her and her child inside.

After she asked him to leave, he restrained her, causing her to scream.

Her son came downstairs, trying to de-escalate and helping to remove Wignall from the house.

He also ensured doors and windows were secured before calling the police.

Wignall then made further threats.

During the hearing, defense attorney Kevin Liston stated that Wignall’s prior record of violence was limited and mainly related to substance misuse, and that he has taken steps to improve.

Judge Prowse sentenced Wignall to 29 months in prison for the three offenses.

He noted that the victim feared she might be killed and observed that Wignall's actions appeared motivated by jealousy.

His ongoing pattern of violence against women was highlighted.

The judge emphasized the seriousness of domestic violence, remarking: “She was more at risk with you than with a stranger,” and cautioned that Wignall’s dangers to current and future partners remain “high.” Wignall of Station Road, Buchlyvie, Stirling, was sentenced to 29 months in prison.
