PHILLIP KIRK FROM NORTHALLERTON JAILED FOR SCHOOL BURGLARY AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In April 2012, Phillip Kirk, a young man from Northallerton, was sentenced to prison following a series of disturbing criminal activities that revealed a troubling pattern of behavior.Kirk was found guilty of breaking into Brompton Primary School with the intent to steal gym clothing. The incident occurred near Northallerton, North Yorkshire, and was discovered after police investigations traced his movements. During the break-in, Kirk attempted to access the school's computer network and rummaged through students' gym bags, indicating a premeditated effort to steal sportswear.
Authorities recovered evidence linking Kirk to the crime, including a wallet containing his driving license, which he inadvertently left at the scene. This piece of evidence was crucial in establishing his identity and subsequent connection to the break-in. The police also found that Kirk had a disturbing obsession with girls’ clothing, which he admitted to deriving sexual gratification from, alongside his possession of indecent images of children.
Further investigation into Kirk’s electronic devices revealed a deeply troubling collection of over 2,500 indecent images of minors. Experts examined his computers and discovered that many of these images fell into the most serious categories of child exploitation material. The court heard that Kirk had been downloading and viewing such images over a period of time, with more than 2,000 images being created before his second arrest, which occurred two months after the initial investigation.
Following his first arrest, Kirk was released on bail but did not cease his illicit activities. Instead, he purchased a new laptop and continued to download and view indecent images, demonstrating a persistent and escalating pattern of offending. Prosecutor Tamara Pawson stated that Kirk admitted to deriving sexual pleasure from both the images and the girls’ clothing, highlighting the depth of his deviance.
It was also revealed that Kirk had a prior history of similar offenses. In 2010, he was convicted for possessing indecent images, and at the age of 15, he received a formal warning for attempting to access child pornography on his school computer system. His parents had previously contacted police when they discovered inappropriate images in his bedroom, indicating ongoing concerns about his behavior.
Judge Peter Fox addressed Kirk directly during sentencing, warning him of the potential consequences of his continued actions. The judge stated, “If you go on, you could be spending the rest of your life in prison.”
Ultimately, Phillip Kirk, of Fernwood Close, Northallerton, was sentenced to three years in prison. He pleaded guilty to charges of making and possessing indecent photographs of children, as well as burglary. The court’s decision reflected the severity of his offenses and the danger posed by his ongoing deviant behavior. His barrister, Carl Swift, expressed hope that with proper support and intervention, Kirk might be able to avoid permanently damaging his future, but the court’s primary concern was the protection of the community from his harmful actions.
