PHILLIP DOUGHTY FROM HULL JAILED FOR GROOMING AND SEXUAL ASSAULT ON SCHOOLBOY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Hull, a local bus driver named Phillip Doughty has been sentenced to prison for his heinous crimes involving a young schoolboy. The incident, which came to light in May 2010, revealed a pattern of grooming and sexual assault carried out by Doughty, who was 53 years old at the time.According to court records, Doughty, a veteran bus driver with three decades of experience, targeted a 13-year-old boy shortly after beginning his employment with Veolia Transport, a company that has since ceased operations. The assault took place in October 2007, on the very first day Doughty started working as a driver in Hull. Over the following months, Doughty engaged in a calculated grooming process, gradually building a relationship of trust with the young victim before committing the sexual assaults.
The court heard that Doughty lured the boy back to his flat located in the Boulevard area of Hull, where the assaults occurred. During the attack, Doughty administered a substance to the boy, who later described feeling extremely frightened and shaking, suspecting he had been drugged. The victim, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, recounted to the court that Doughty offered him a glass of water before the assault, and that he was so traumatized by the experience that he attempted to take his own life.
In a further act of malicious intent, Doughty removed the battery from the boy’s mobile phone, preventing him from calling for help or alerting anyone to his predicament. After the assault, Doughty drove the boy home, leaving him in a state of distress. The young victim struggled for two years to come to terms with what had happened, and eventually confided in a counselor, which led to the police being involved.
The police investigation uncovered more disturbing evidence when they searched Doughty’s residence. Inside his safe, officers discovered approximately 6,000 indecent images of children, further implicating him in child exploitation.
Following a swift trial at Hull Crown Court, a jury deliberated for only 40 minutes before finding Doughty guilty of two counts of sexual assault in March 2010. Despite having no prior convictions, Doughty’s long-standing career as a bus driver was marred by these allegations. He had been employed by East Yorkshire Motor Services, a company that he joined shortly after the assaults, passing a Criminal Records Bureau check. However, his employment was terminated when police investigations commenced.
Judge Michael Mettyear sentenced Doughty to a total of 42 months in prison—two and a half years for indecent assault and an additional year for possessing child pornography images. The sentences are to be served consecutively. Additionally, Doughty is required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
Humberside Police have expressed concern that Doughty may have other victims across Hull and the surrounding East Riding area. Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to contact them at 0845 6060222, in hopes of preventing further harm and bringing additional victims to justice.
