PHILIP OLIVER FROM BOWBURN SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES INVOLVING COUNTY DURHAM TEENAGER
In June 2020, a disturbing case emerged involving Philip Oliver, a man from Bowburn, County Durham, who engaged in heinous acts involving a teenage girl he met online.The incident came to light when police responded to a report of a missing teenager and discovered the girl at Oliver’s residence.
The girl, who was only 16 at the time, had been driven approximately 200 miles from her home to Oliver’s house in Bowburn, raising serious concerns about exploitation and abuse.
During the investigation, authorities found compelling evidence on multiple electronic devices belonging to Oliver.
Although he claimed that his relationship with the girl was merely a friendship and not sexual in nature, the evidence told a different story.
A video was recovered showing the girl, who was just 15 years old at the time, taking a shower.
In the footage, Oliver’s reflection can be seen in the mirror as he films her.
The court heard that Oliver was heard encouraging her to touch herself sexually, with him saying, “No judge will take you away from me,” indicating a disturbing attempt to manipulate and control her.
Further examination of six electronic devices revealed a folder labeled with the girl’s name, containing additional indecent images.
Police also uncovered messages exchanged between Oliver and the girl, which included the sending of pornographic images.
The digital evidence was extensive, comprising 491 Category A indecent images and 24 moving images, some of which depicted children as young as two years old.
These images were stored across multiple devices, highlighting the severity and scale of Oliver’s offending.
Following the investigation, Philip Oliver, aged 40 and residing on Prince Charles Avenue in Bowburn, pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
These included inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, three counts of making indecent images of a child, possessing a prohibited image of a child, possessing extreme pornography, and distributing an indecent photo of a child.
His guilty plea led to a substantial prison sentence of 32 months.
Additionally, Oliver was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will restrict his activities and associations for the next ten years, aiming to protect the public from further harm.
His sentencing underscores the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and abuse in the region.
