KILLER RAPIST SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS AFTER SAVAGE ATTACK IN KILLARNEY HOTEL
A man named Philip McGrane was condemned and sentenced to imprisonment after being found guilty of a brutal sexual assault on a tourist. The attack took place in a hotel in Killarney, Co Kerry, on June 6, 2005.
McGrane, aged 39 at the time, faced a court hearing during which it was revealed that he subjected a 56-year-old woman to a savage rape, humiliating her in various ways.
The court heard details of the attack, including that McGrane hit the victim multiple times on her bottom and forced her to perform sex acts, while also smelling and stuffing her underpants into his pocket.
The victim described her fear during the ordeal, saying, "I was very frightened and said I would do what he wanted so long as he didn't hurt me." The judge, Mr.
Justice Paul Carney, described the violence as savage and imposed a ten-year prison sentence for rape with a concurrent four-year sentence for sexual assault.
Additionally, McGrane was ordered to undergo a five-year period of post-release supervision.
The court acknowledged the grievous nature of the crime, noting that the attack had a profound impact on the woman's life, including the breakdown of her relationship.
McGrane maintained that the sex was consensual, claiming the victim gave him her room number and invited him up, but the court rejected his claims of consent.
The incident also involved McGrane behaving inappropriately, such as sniffing the victim's underwear before the attack.
The court's decision reflects the gravity of the offense and the need for supervision after release.
