Hartlepool Domestic Abuser
A man from Hartlepool, Peter Sharp, aged 37, has been convicted of a series of brutal and disturbing acts of domestic abuse against his girlfriend, which included severe physical violence and degrading treatment. The court heard that Sharp subjected his partner to relentless assaults, resulting in a broken leg and a series of humiliating and degrading acts such as urinating on her.

According to the prosecution, Shaun Dodds, Sharp repeatedly punched his girlfriend, pulled her hair, and went through her phone during one particularly vicious attack. On one occasion, after the woman had retreated to bed to escape the violence, Sharp woke her up and punched her in the face. The court was told that her fear was so intense that she attempted to escape by climbing out of a bedroom window, only to be pulled back inside, causing her to fall to the floor.

Further details revealed that Sharp's cruelty extended beyond physical violence. He urinated over his girlfriend, poured water on her, and spat at her, demonstrating a pattern of degrading and humiliating behavior. The most serious incident occurred on August 27 of the previous year, following a trip to the cinema. Sharp left early to buy cocaine, and upon returning, accused his partner of speaking to other men. During a drive home, he violently grabbed her hair and dragged her out of the vehicle. The assault escalated when he kicked her with such force that her leg was broken, and he lifted her off the ground in the process.

The violence did not end there. While she was driving, Sharp launched a second attack by grabbing the steering wheel, which caused her to lose control and crash into a parked car. These actions demonstrated a pattern of controlling and coercive behavior, as well as dangerous interference with a vehicle, which posed a risk to road users.

Sharp pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including controlling or coercive behavior, actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm, three counts of common assault, and causing danger to road users. His defense argued that he was under the influence of drugs at the time, which he used to cope with several personal bereavements. It was noted that he is now drug-free and has taken on a mentoring role for others while serving his sentence in prison, where he has been held on remand since September.

Judge Howard Crowson sentenced Sharp to four years in prison, emphasizing the severity of his crimes. The judge stated, “Your partner experienced quite appalling pain and suffering at your hands and she has been particularly mentally harmed for a period of two and a half years.” The case highlights the ongoing issue of domestic abuse and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
