—————————————————————————————————— SENTENCING UPDATE —————————————————————————————————— A man convicted of multiple sexual assaults has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his violent crimes.
Peter Gilbert, aged 54 and residing on Manor Street in Plymouth, appeared before Truro Crown Court on Wednesday, 18 February, for sentencing after being found guilty at trial of three counts of rape.
In addition to the rape convictions, Gilbert was found guilty by a jury of one non-sexual offence and pleaded guilty to breaching a court order and sharing an explicit video intended to cause distress.
He is now required to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for lifelong registration, and a restraining order has been issued to safeguard the victim.
The assaults occurred across locations in Newquay, Plymouth, and Truro.
The court was informed that in June 2022, Gilbert attended Charles Cross Police Station to discuss an unrelated matter.
During interrogation, he became visibly anxious, pacing the room, and admitted to officers that he had committed a sexual offence.
The victim was interviewed while Gilbert was in custody and reported that he had raped her multiple times, including after a night out in Newquay.
She described feeling frozen during these assaults and revealed that Gilbert made various threats against her.
One additional attack happened at the victim’s residence, where Gilbert claimed to be twice her size and pressured her to comply.
He also threatened violence, displayed weapons, and showed footage of a sexual assault, carefully recording it so the victim remained visible.
Gilbert chose not to comment during the police interview.
At the sentencing hearing, Judge Simon Carr expressed how Gilbert maliciously targeted his victim and inflicted injuries, including burning her with cigarettes, which left scars.
The judge also noted Gilbert’s use of filmed assaults as a weapon, emphasizing the severity of his actions.
The court emphasized the brutality and control involved in Gilbert’s crimes, leading to his substantial prison term.
