Aberdare Domestic Abuser
A man named Paulo Lopes was convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm after he grabbed a wine bottle during a heated argument with his partner and struck her in the face with it. When police arrived at their residence in Aberdare, they found blood splatters on the walls and blood-stained clothing. Lopes initially told officers that the woman had fallen and hit her head on a radiator, but he later admitted to grabbing the bottle and hitting her. The victim told police she had fallen over while walking home with a bottle of wine, contradicting Lopes’s account. Lopes has a prior conviction for assaulting the same woman, having repeatedly punched her in bed. During interviews, Lopes gave varying versions of events, claiming the incident was a drunken dispute and that his partner attacked him, prompting him to threaten her with the bottle and hit her. The Crown argued that the case was unusual because the victim falsely reported the events to protect Lopes. Lopes, of Tirfounder Road, Cwmbach, Aberdare, was found guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm and sentenced to 15 months in jail. The court acknowledged Lopes’s remorse but highlighted that he had initially lied to police about the incident.
