OFFENDER PAUL TOPHAM TO BE JAILED FOR BRUTAL ELDERY MURDER
An infamous burglar, responsible for a vicious assault that resulted in the death of a cherished great-grandfather, was scheduled for sentencing in court today.Paul Topham, aged 45 and suffering from addiction issues, from Sparkbrook, entered Harold Monk's residence in Wolverhampton while the elderly man was sleeping on October 3 of the previous year.
The 94-year-old victim awoke to discover Topham, masked, rummaging through his belongings.
Instead of fleeing, Topham subdued Mr.
Monk and attacked him repeatedly.
The assault caused significant injuries, including fractures to his face, skull, spine, and ribs.
Remarkably, despite his critical condition, Harold Monk was able to provide police with a detailed account of the incident from his hospital bed.
Sadly, he died the following day.
Topham, residing on Palmerston Road, Sparkbrook, denied involvement in murder, but a jury found him guilty after a trial.
The sentencing was scheduled for September 11.
Detective Inspector Phil Poole, leading the investigation, noted the unusual nature of the case since Harold was alive after the attack.
Harold's daughter, Patricia, honored her father's memory, describing him as a kind and loved man who brought joy to his family.
She expressed how much they miss his humor and presence, as well as his love for watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow older.
