Victims of a Doncaster-based predatory paedophile have shared their stories after he was sentenced to over three decades behind bars.

South Yorkshire Police have publicly acknowledged the bravery of these women, who demonstrated resilience and courage to secure a conviction and significant imprisonment for Paul Mundy, a man responsible for horrific abuse that has profoundly impacted their lives.

The court heard the testimonies of four individuals who experienced non-recent sexual offences, which contributed to Mundy’s sentencing.

Three of these women—Joanna Hobbs, Megan O’Brien, and Victoria Bunch—dared to waive their right to anonymity in order to tell their stories of suffering at Mundy’s hands.

A detailed and lengthy investigation led to Mundy’s conviction at Sheffield Crown Court on May 15.

The 71-year-old, residing on Market Place in Bawtry, was found guilty of 24 counts related to rape and sexual assault.

Mundy’s denial of his crimes meant that his victims had to endure reliving their trauma during the trial.

Nonetheless, the jury was persuaded by the evidence and the victims’ bravery, resulting in justice being served.

Joanna Hobbs, one of the brave victims who chose to identify herself, recounted her experience of being abused by her stepfather from the age of five up into her teenage years.

She described feeling paralyzed by fear and powerless during the abuse, sharing how her trauma continues to affect her daily life.

She detailed how sensory reminders such as childhood songs, scents, and foods evoke painful memories.

Despite the inability to recover her lost childhood, Joanna expressed a sense of empowerment through seeking justice.

She praised the court process for exposing the full extent of Mundy’s deceit and cruelty, preventing further victims.

Megan O’Brien, Mundy’s step-granddaughter, also disclosed her suffering.

She was subjected to abuse starting in primary school, which has left her with ongoing mental health issues, academic challenges, and difficulties in personal relationships.

Megan described feeling betrayed by someone who should have protected her and shared how the abuse warped her understanding of love and her own value.

She highlighted her resilience, emphasizing her journey toward healing and regaining her voice.

Megan asserted that although the harm cannot be erased, her strength has allowed her to take control of her future, vowing not to let Mundy’s actions define her.

Victoria Bunch’s account revealed sexual assault by Mundy during her adolescence.

She detailed feelings of shame and embarrassment that linger to this day, affecting her trust and intimate relationships.

Her bravery in speaking out contributed to Mundy’s conviction on two counts of indecent assault.

The investigation was coordinated by Doncaster’s Protecting Vulnerable People team, which collected substantial evidence, including victim testimonies and medical records, to support the case.

This effort underlines the importance of backing victims in their pursuit of justice and reinforces the need to safeguard vulnerable individuals.
