PAUL JOHN WATTS OF PAULSGROVE SENTENCED TO 27 YEARS FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER IN HORRIFIC ASSAULT
On Thursday, 27 March, Paul John Watts, a resident of Cinderford Close in Paulsgrove, was found guilty by a court of serious assault resulting in life-threatening injuries to a woman in the same area last year. The incident, which drew immediate concern from local residents and authorities, took place on Thursday, 31 October, prompting a rapid response from emergency services. At approximately 3:10 pm, emergency responders were dispatched to Cinderford Close following reports of a distressing incident involving a 37-year-old woman. Upon arrival, paramedics discovered her suffering from severe injuries that were deemed potentially fatal. She was swiftly transported to Southampton General Hospital, where she received urgent medical care. Her condition was critical at the time, but she has since been discharged earlier this year as her recovery progresses. Notably, the woman has no recollection of the assault, which has left her and her family grappling with trauma and uncertainty.
During the subsequent court proceedings, the judge highlighted the severity of the injuries inflicted upon the victim. It was stated that Watts had left her bleeding and unconscious, with the judge condemning his actions by remarking, “You left her for dead.” The court heard statements from the victim herself and her family members, painting a stark picture of the lasting impact of the attack.
The victim’s sister expressed her anguish and hope, saying, “She will never be the same again because of what Paul did that day, but with support from family and friends, her and her children will find their new normal. I have no doubt in my mind about how far she has come, the strength and courage she has shown throughout and that she will continue to progress and will not let what happened that day define her. My sister is my inspiration and someone I will always look up to.”
In a sentencing hearing held at Portsmouth Crown Court on Tuesday, 3 June, Watts was handed a sentence of twenty-seven years in prison for attempted murder. Additionally, he was given an extended license period of five years, ensuring close supervision upon his release. The court’s decision underscores the gravity of the crime and the community’s demand for justice in the wake of such a violent and life-altering assault in Paulsgrove.
