In October 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving Paul Goddard, a resident of Wellington Street in Accrington, who was found in possession of a deeply troubling video depicting an eight-year-old girl who was restrained and subjected to sexual assault. Despite the severity of the material, Goddard managed to avoid immediate imprisonment, sparking outrage and concern among legal officials and the public alike.

On October 23, 2014, police officers executed a warrant at Goddard’s home in Accrington. During the search, they confiscated a mobile phone that contained the heinous video along with four other indecent images of children. The court proceedings revealed that the images on the device numbered approximately 50, although the actual count was reduced due to the difficulty in recovering some images without advanced software. Prosecutor William Donnelly explained that if images are beyond the reach of standard recovery methods, they are not considered in the defendant’s control or possession, which affected the case’s severity.

Goddard, aged 34, pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children. His sentencing included a 10-month jail term, which was suspended for two years, accompanied by a supervision order and a requirement to undergo a sex offender treatment program. Additionally, he was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order and mandated to notify authorities of any relevant changes for the next decade.
