PAUL CORDWELL SENTENCED IN THE WOOD FOR SECOND TIME SEX OFFENCE IN STOKE-ON-TRENT

In a case that has once again brought to light the disturbing pattern of sexual misconduct by Paul Cordwell, the 47-year-old offender from The Wood, Meir, has been sentenced to a 15-month prison term following his conviction for indecently assaulting a young girl. The incident, which spanned over five years, was not reported by the victim at the time, leaving authorities to piece together the details during the court proceedings.

Prosecutor Joanne Wallbanks outlined that Cordwell would touch the girl over her clothing, a form of assault that, while seemingly less invasive, is still a serious violation of personal boundaries and trust. Cordwell, who pleaded guilty to four counts of indecent assault, has a troubling history, including a previous conviction for a similar offence. In November of the previous year, he was sentenced to 21 months at Peterborough Crown Court for the sexual assault of another young girl under the age of 13, an offence committed after the incidents now under review.

During the hearing at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, defense lawyer Paul Cliff acknowledged the gravity of the offences but emphasized that Cordwell's actions were limited to touching over clothing, with no penetration or violence involved. He pointed out that the defendant was aware of the potential consequences and expressed remorse, suggesting that a suspended sentence coupled with strict conditions might be more appropriate. Mr. Cliff also highlighted that Cordwell's previous conviction worsened his current situation, making it clear that the offender recognized the need for professional help to address his issues.

However, Judge Robert Trevor-Jones was firm in his decision, stating that failing to impose a custodial sentence would be a disservice to the public. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offences, particularly noting the repeated and persistent nature of Cordwell's actions against a very young girl. He expressed concern over the fact that this was the second time Cordwell had appeared in court for similar offences, indicating a troubling pattern of behavior that suggested a deep-rooted tendency to seek sexual gratification through the abuse of young girls.

Consequently, Judge Trevor-Jones sentenced Cordwell to 15 months in prison. Additionally, he ordered that Cordwell be placed on the sex offenders' register for ten years and disqualified him from working with children, measures designed to protect the community and prevent further harm. The court's decision underscores the importance of addressing such serious offences with appropriate severity to uphold justice and safeguard vulnerable individuals.
