Trent Vale Rapist
In October 2021, Paul Clutton, a resident of London Road in Trent Vale, Stoke-on-Trent, was handed a severe prison sentence of 21 years after being convicted of multiple heinous sexual offenses committed against a young female victim during the 1990s.

Clutton, aged 60 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty on three counts of rape and three counts of indecent assault. The trial revealed a disturbing pattern of what has been described as a 'campaign of serious sexual offending' against the victim, who was a child at the time of the abuse.

Throughout the proceedings, Clutton maintained his innocence, denying the charges. However, the jury's verdict was in favor of the prosecution, leading to his conviction. During the sentencing hearing, a heartfelt statement from the victim was read aloud. She recounted the profound and lasting impact of the abuse, revealing that she had struggled with self-harm for most of her life and had attempted suicide multiple times, describing her emotional pain as 'unbearable.'

She further explained the difficulty she faced in forming relationships with men, feeling as though she was constantly on the run from her trauma. Her words painted a stark picture of the deep scars left by Clutton's actions, emphasizing the long-term psychological damage inflicted upon her.

Judge Sally Hancox addressed Clutton directly, condemning his actions and emphasizing the severity of his crimes. She stated, 'You committed these offences in a campaign of serious sexual offending against the victim.' The judge highlighted the victim's bravery in sharing her story, noting her honesty and the pain she endured. She also pointed out that Clutton showed no remorse or apology for his actions.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Hancox underscored that the only appropriate punishment was a lengthy custodial sentence, reflecting the gravity of Clutton's misconduct. She also ordered that Clutton be subject to the notification requirements of the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.

Clutton displayed no visible emotion as he was led away to serve his sentence, leaving a community and a victim seeking justice and closure after years of suffering.
