A Nigerian student, Oyinkuro Finikumo, has been sentenced to prison for the crime of rape committed in Aberdeen.
Finikumo, aged 41, was pursuing a post-graduate degree at the University of Aberdeen in 2022 and had previously worked as a college lecturer in Nigeria.
He was convicted of raping a woman after a graduation party held on February 23, 2022.
The High Court in Aberdeen found Finikumo guilty, by a majority, of one charge of rape following a trial last month.
The court heard that the rape occurred after the party, where the victim confided that she was tired and did not want to engage in sexual activity, but Finikumo forced himself upon her to satisfy his own desires.
The victim's impact statement revealed she suffered significant psychological trauma due to the incident.
Finikumo had since moved to Wolverhampton and has a wife and two children living in Nigeria.
His defense lawyer, David Moggach KC, argued that Finikumo denies guilt and requested a lenient sentence, citing his lack of previous convictions and low risk to the public, along with plans to return to Nigeria after the case.
However, the judge, Graham Buchanan, sentenced Finikumo to six years in prison and ordered him to register as a sex offender indefinitely.
Additionally, a non-harassment order was imposed to prohibit any contact with the victim indefinitely.
