Sale Withington Rapist
In a case that has spanned over two decades, Owen Mak, a 60-year-old man residing on Dennison Avenue in Withington, has been formally sentenced for the sexual abuse of a young girl in Sale. The sentencing took place at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court on Friday, April 1, and marks the culmination of a lengthy legal process that has brought justice to the victim.

Mak was convicted on 21 counts of indecent assault following an earlier court hearing, and as part of his sentence, he will be registered as a sex offender for the remainder of his life. The abuse began when the victim was only eight years old, in 1992, and continued for nearly a decade until she was 14 years old in 2001. The victim, now 25, decided to come forward and report the abuse after years of silence.

Initially, the girl chose not to pursue charges, citing a lack of strength to face the legal process at the time. However, her decision to seek justice was reignited in January of the current year when she saw Mak at the Trafford Centre accompanied by a child. Concerned that the abuse might be ongoing or could happen again to another young girl, she made the courageous choice to contact the police.

Detective Constable Sandra Callender, who is based at Altrincham Police Station, expressed admiration for the victim’s bravery. She stated, “This woman has been incredibly brave by coming forward and helping us put Mak through the court process. We take all reports of sexual abuse and rape seriously, regardless of how long ago they occurred. If anyone else is in a similar situation, I want them to feel confident in coming forward so we can ensure justice is served for them too.”
