NORMAN WESTERN SENTENCED IN ABERDEEN FOR DECADES-OLD ABUSE CASE

A pensioner from Aberdeen, Norman Western, aged 74, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison after admitting to a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against a young girl during the 1970s and 1980s. The disturbing case, which spanned over a decade, was brought to light more than 40 years after the abuse took place, culminating in Western’s appearance at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.

Western’s victim, whose identity remains protected, endured repeated acts of lewd, indecent, and libidinous behavior at the hands of Western during her childhood. The court was informed that her ordeal was ongoing until she found the courage to confront her abuser and demand that the abuse cease. This confrontation marked a turning point in her life, but the trauma inflicted by Western’s actions had a profound and lasting impact on her mental health.

During a prior hearing, it was revealed that the victim had suffered a breakdown in her 20s, a consequence of the abuse that left her with significant psychological scars. The court heard that her suffering was severe and that the abuse had a long-lasting effect on her wellbeing. Western’s crimes only came to light after he was arrested in 2018, following an investigation into historical abuse allegations.

Western appeared before Aberdeen Sheriff Court in June, where the sentencing was deferred to allow for social work reports to be prepared. Yesterday, Sheriff Graham Buchanan addressed Western directly, stating, “Although you are now 74 years of age, I am satisfied that the crime is so serious that a custodial sentence is appropriate.”

As a result, Western was sentenced to serve three years and nine months behind bars. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for an indefinite period, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct. Western, who resides on Tullos Crescent in Aberdeen, will now face the consequences of his actions for years to come, with the court emphasizing the gravity of his offenses and the importance of justice for his victim.
