NORMAN THRUSH FROM TYNE & WEAR SPARED JAIL AFTER BEING CAUGHT WITH 15,000 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES
In December 2019, a disturbing case emerged involving Norman Thrush, a pensioner from Tyne & Wear, who was found in possession of an alarming collection of over 15,000 indecent images depicting children. Despite the severity of the charges, Thrush was ultimately spared imprisonment, a decision made to allow him to continue caring for his wife, who suffers from arthritis. The police investigation was initiated after authorities received information from the National Crime Agency. In November 2018, officers executed a search warrant at Thrush’s residence, which he shared with his wife. During the raid, law enforcement officials discovered multiple hard drives containing a vast number of illicit images. Among these were two categorized as level B and more than 15,000 classified as level C, indicating the images' disturbing nature.
Prosecutor Neil Pallister detailed that the children depicted in these images were estimated to be between five and seven years old. The images had been downloaded over a period of six years, spanning from July 2012 to November 2018. The court was informed that Thrush had used specific search terms, including “child love,” while viewing these images within his home.
During the court proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court, Thrush pleaded guilty to two counts of making indecent images of a child. The judge, Penny Moreland, expressed her concern over Thrush’s inability to recognize the severity of his actions. She emphasized that each of the 15,000 images represented a real child being sexually exploited and abused, with each image contributing to the ongoing cycle of harm and online distribution.
Judge Moreland stated, “I’m concerned to see you were unable to identify the images being of child abuse. Every one of these 15,000 images involved a real child somewhere in the world being sexually abused and exploited so the image could be taken and put on the internet for people like you to view for your own sexual gratification. A child was abused every time one of these images was created. If you have so far been unable to understand that you were watching images of children being abused, now is the time for you to understand.”
In her ruling, the judge acknowledged Thrush’s age and his role as a carer for his wife, which influenced her decision to avoid jail time. The case highlights the ongoing issues surrounding online exploitation and the importance of understanding the real harm caused by such illicit material.
