ABERDEEN DRUG-FUELLED KILLER HANDED LIFE FOR BRUTAL KNIFE MURDER
A violent drug user who also sexually assaulted and murdered an Aberdeen grandmother in a frenzied knife attack was sentenced to life imprisonment today.Norman Duncan, who was under the influence of crack cocaine, stabbed Margaret Robertson, aged 54, at least 25 times during the deadly assault at her flat in Seaton’s Promenade Court.A judge described the attack as "a sustained and merciless attack inflicted upon a defenceless woman in her home." Lord Harrower ordered that Duncan serve a minimum of 20 years before being eligible for parole, warning that release is not automatic and depends on the risk assessment of the Parole Board.Family’s Long Wait for JusticeMs Robertson’s children, Michelle and Mark, issued a heartfelt statement after sentencing, explaining that they had waited over two-and-a-half years for justice, which had caused significant personal stress.
They expressed gratitude toward those who supported them through this period and remembered their mother as a loved mum, daughter, grandma, and friend, asking for privacy following the tragedy.Criminal Record and BackgroundThe court detailed Duncan’s extensive criminal history, which includes 74 previous convictions, 58 of which resulted in prison sentences.
His past offences include serious assault, assault with a weapon, attempts at robbery, mobbing, and rioting. He denied the murder charges initially, but was found guilty after a trial.
The court described the brutal nature of the killing, including Duncan struggling with Ms Robertson, touching her inappropriately, sexually penetrating her, and stabbing her repeatedly in her head, neck, and body with a knife.
The cause of death was confirmed as multiple stab wounds to the face and neck.He was also diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and was on antipsychotic medication.
Duncan had a history of drug abuse since the age of 26 and was placed in a high-security hospital at Carstairs before being returned to prison.During police questioning, Duncan denied involvement, saying, "It’s f*** all to do with me." Investigations found DNA under the victim’s fingernails, and forensic evidence confirmed his involvement.
Duncan had previously faced charges related to possession of cocaine and attempting to conceal evidence, but these were withdrawn, and he was acquitted. The incident was reported as a brutal murder with significant forensic and witness evidence supporting Duncan’s guilt, including DNA matches and descriptions of defensive injuries from the victim.
