NIGEL MCDERMOTT OF HARNHAM JAILED FOR TRAVELING 100 MILES TO MEET TEEN IN WEST SUSSEX
In a case that highlights the dangers of online predation, Nigel McDermott, a 53-year-old man from Harnham near Salisbury, was sentenced to three years in prison after traveling approximately 100 miles from Wiltshire to West Sussex with the intent to engage in sexual activity with a girl he believed to be a teenager.McDermott, who is identified as a builder's merchant by profession, was apprehended by police officers in a car park located within Tilgate Park in Crawley on February 12th. The arrest followed an extensive online investigation during which McDermott engaged in conversations with an individual he thought was a 13-year-old girl. However, the person he was communicating with was actually an undercover police officer.
Authorities confirmed that no actual child was at risk during the incident, as the entire interaction was part of a police operation. Despite this, McDermott’s actions demonstrated a clear intent to commit a sexual offence involving a minor, leading to his guilty plea at Hove Crown Court last Tuesday. The court proceedings revealed that McDermott had traveled from his residence on Hawks Ridge in Harnham, a suburb just outside Salisbury, to meet the supposed teenager.
Following his conviction, McDermott was sentenced to three years in prison. Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender and is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). This order imposes strict restrictions on his access to children and computers, with both conditions set to remain in effect until further notice from the court.
The case was prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and was the result of a meticulous, intelligence-led investigation conducted by Sussex Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT), which collaborated closely with the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU). The operation underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from predatory behavior.
