NIGEL DUVALL FROM HADLOW CONVICTED OF SEXUAL ACTIVITY WITH TEENAGE GIRL NEAR TONBRIDGE
In a case that has shocked the local community of Hadlow near Tonbridge, Nigel Duvall, a 48-year-old builder residing on Marshall Gardens, was found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a minor. The incident, which took place between February and March of the previous year, led to a court trial at Maidstone Crown Court where the evidence against Duvall was thoroughly examined.According to the prosecution, Duvall's behavior towards the teenage girl was inappropriate and made her feel uncomfortable on multiple occasions. The court heard that Duvall became overly familiar with the girl, crossing boundaries that should have remained professional and respectful. On one particular occasion, the girl was standing behind Duvall when she felt his hand touch her in a manner that she described as groping. Prosecutor Alexia Zimbler explained that Duvall turned around and smiled at her in a way that left no doubt about his intentions, which the girl found distressing.
Further evidence presented in court included three text messages found on the girl’s phone, which were sent by Duvall. The first message read “Beautiful” and was signed off with three kisses. The second message stated, “You look really beautiful,” and the third was more personal, saying, “I think I’m falling in love with you.” These messages raised concerns about the nature of Duvall’s feelings and intentions towards the girl.
During police interviews, Duvall claimed that he had been told the girl had a crush on him and that his messages were intended to discourage her. He explained that he sent the messages “to put her off,” claiming that he was intoxicated at a party when he decided, as a joke, to send the first message. Duvall insisted that he had no sexual interest in the girl and denied any allegations of sexual touching, asserting that what the girl claimed did not happen.
Following a majority verdict of 10-2 in favor of conviction, Judge Philip St John-Stevens adjourned sentencing until February 4 to allow for reports to be prepared. Duvall was granted bail pending the sentencing hearing, which will determine the final consequences of his actions. The case has left many in Hadlow and the surrounding areas contemplating issues of trust and safety for young people in the community.
