NICKY MILLER'S BRUTAL ATTACK IN SHERBURN HILL LEAVES VICTIM TERRIFIED AND INJURED
A man named Nicky Miller was involved in a violent assault against his former partner in Sherburn Hill, an incident that has shocked the local community and resulted in serious injuries. The events unfolded shortly after the couple returned from a holiday on September 6 of the previous year, only to discover that their home had been broken into and several valuable possessions, including an Xbox, had been stolen.Durham Crown Court heard that police responded promptly to the scene, conducting a thorough forensic investigation across the property located in Sherburn Hill. The investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior fueled by alcohol and cannabis consumption, which had escalated tensions between Miller and his partner. Prosecutor Adrian Strong described both individuals as being visibly upset following the burglary, and noted that their drinking and drug use appeared to have contributed to a heated argument.
As the situation worsened, Miller, who was increasingly intoxicated, grew more irate over the theft, particularly blaming his partner for the loss of his belongings. His frustration turned violent when he physically assaulted her, punching her on the side of her head. This blow caused her to perforate her eardrum, resulting in hearing difficulties. During the incident, she attempted to record Miller on her phone, capturing footage that showed him in a highly intoxicated state as he damaged property within the house.
According to Mr. Strong, Miller’s aggression intensified to the point where he punched his partner with such force that she was knocked backwards, losing consciousness briefly. She sustained fractures to her facial bones and was left with cuts and bruises all over her body. The assault continued as Miller kicked her while she was on the ground. In a further act of violence, he picked up a knife and advanced toward her, causing her to fear for her life. Despite her fear, she managed to muster enough strength to struggle with him, during which he was cut on the leg by the knife, bringing the attack to an end.
Following the assault, the victim was able to call for an ambulance, and police arrived simultaneously. Both parties were taken to separate hospitals, where the victim provided a detailed account of the events to officers. Medical examinations confirmed she had suffered a sinus fracture and a perforated eardrum, injuries consistent with the violence inflicted upon her.
When questioned by police, Miller refused to comment, offering no explanation for his actions. It was later revealed that he was 37 years old and currently residing at Fair View, West Rainton. During a scheduled trial last month, Miller pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) as an alternative to GBH with intent. He admitted to punching his partner twice in the head or face, kicking her while she was on the ground, and acknowledged taking a knife into the room, although he denied lunging at her with it.
Court records show that Miller has a criminal history comprising six convictions for ten offenses, including a previous GBH for which he received a suspended prison sentence. His record also includes recent convictions related to drink and drug driving. His victim, now his ex-partner, provided a victim statement describing the profound impact the incident has had on her mental health. She explained that she now feels easily frightened, has installed new security measures at her home, and struggles with sleep and flashbacks, fearing that Miller might have killed her. She expressed that her life has been irrevocably changed, stating, “Nicky put me through hell and changed my everyday life. I won’t be the same again.”
Defense lawyer Calum McNicholas highlighted that Miller’s guilty plea spared the court a trial and the victim from having to testify. He pointed out that Miller’s only recent convictions were related to driving offenses, with the last violent incident dating back to 2008. McNicholas also noted that Miller is committed to using his time in custody productively, learning new skills, and working full-time as an enhanced prisoner.
Judge Richard Bennett addressed the court, emphasizing the severity of Miller’s actions. He described the incident as a prolonged and persistent assault that caused significant trauma to the victim. The judge acknowledged that, although the injuries were not life-threatening, the violence was extremely distressing and took place within the sanctity of the family home. He condemned the attack as a very unpleasant act of violence, highlighting the lasting psychological scars it left.
As a result, Judge Bennett sentenced Miller to 30 months in prison. Additionally, he imposed a ten-year restraining order to protect the victim, prohibiting Miller from approaching or contacting her directly or indirectly through third parties. The order also bans him from entering Jubilee Crescent in Sherburn Hill during that period, ensuring her safety and peace of mind moving forward.
