Letchworth Rapist
In a series of disturbing criminal cases, Nicholas Day, a man residing on Wilbury Hills Road in Letchworth, has been convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses involving young girls in the towns of Stevenage and Hitchin. The court proceedings revealed a pattern of grooming, manipulation, and abuse that spanned several years, culminating in a lengthy prison sentence.

It was in June 2018 that Day was first brought to justice for his heinous acts. The case centered around his grooming of a 12-year-old girl he met through the social media platform Myspace. At the time, Day was 23 years old but falsely claimed to be 17. He used online messaging to establish a relationship with her, gradually gaining her trust before arranging to meet her in person.

The court heard that Day would regularly pick her up after school in Stevenage, where she attended school, and then take her to secluded locations. During these meetings, he would subject her to sexual acts, exploiting her vulnerability and innocence. The girl, who later reported the abuse to the police when she was 19, recounted that Day would often stop his car outside her home, smoke a cigarette, and then get into the back seat with her. On one occasion, she told the court, she explicitly told him she did not want to go with him and called him a “paedophile,” indicating her awareness of the inappropriate nature of his actions.

When arrested, Day initially denied knowing the girl, claiming it was a case of mistaken identity. However, the evidence presented in court proved otherwise. Judge Barbara Mensah sentenced him to 23 years in prison, emphasizing the danger he posed. She stated, “You managed to groom her into believing this was a genuine romantic relationship between you. She felt unable to say no to you. That you are dangerous is without doubt.” The sentence also includes a six-year extended license, with the requirement that he serve at least two-thirds of his term.

Further allegations emerged in March of the same year when another girl, who was just seven years old at the time, came forward. Her family reported that Day had sexually assaulted and raped her. The jury found him guilty of eight counts of raping a child under 13, two additional charges of rape, attempted rape of a child under 13, three counts of assault by penetration, and meeting a child following sexual grooming. These convictions underscore the extent of his predatory behavior.

In the second case, Day was also accused of raping a 12-year-old girl in Stevenage. The court heard that he had initially contacted her online, falsely claiming to be 17 when he was actually 23. Their communication began in 2009, and they eventually met in person after he drove to Stevenage to pick her up from school. During their meetings, he engaged in sexual acts, including attempting to perform oral sex, which she resisted. Despite her protests, he continued to pursue her, claiming they were in a relationship and threatening to find someone else if she refused.

The abuse escalated over time, with Day eventually having full sexual intercourse with her just before her 13th birthday. The girl described feeling both fear and confusion, but also relief when she finally told him she did not want to see him anymore, calling him a “paedophile.” After their contact ceased, she felt able to resume her normal teenage life. She only reported the abuse to police when she was 19, after which Day was arrested. He again denied the allegations, claiming he did not know the girl and that he was being wrongly accused.

Judge Barbara Mensah, presiding over the case, remanded Day into custody ahead of sentencing scheduled for June 29 at Luton Crown Court. The court’s findings highlight the severity of his crimes and the danger he poses to society. Nicholas Day’s actions have left a trail of trauma and suffering for his victims, and his lengthy imprisonment aims to prevent him from harming others in the future.
