RAPIST SEXUALLY ASSAULTED GIRL IN HIS CARAVAN
A lorry driver and convicted paedophile, Nicholas Dalby, has had his prison sentence extended by an additional eight years after a second victim came forward.Dalby, 50, who was previously residing in the Selby area and more recently in Thirsk, was already serving time for abusing one child several years ago.
He faced a second prosecution after a woman contacted police in 2020, revealing that Dalby had assaulted her more than 15 years prior.
She described in her victim personal statement to the court that Dalby had raped and indecently assaulted her in various locations, including in his lorry.
Addressing Dalby directly, she stated: "You shaped me as a child and teenager, but you will not shape me as an adult.
This is where my strength has come from: I will not allow you to harm another child.
By speaking up and telling the truth, I am helping to protect other girls from harm." Following the court hearing, Detective Sergeant Sarah Jobe of Northallerton CID commented: "The victim in this case showed immense courage in coming forward, having had to endure these dreadful crimes at a young age.
Dalby denied the offences throughout the investigation, which added further trauma for the victim, but her strength has ensured justice has now been achieved.
I hope this conviction shows other victims that it’s never too late to seek support for what has happened.
By speaking to the police or other organisations, victims can access help and advice, and we can work to protect others." Dalby initially denied the allegations when police arrested him and also denied all charges during his first court appearance at York Crown Court.
However, on the day he was scheduled to stand trial, he changed his plea and admitted to three counts of rape, four counts of indecent assault, and one count of indecency with a child.
He was subsequently sentenced to an additional eight years in prison, which will run consecutively to his existing sentence, and will serve an extra year on a prison licence upon release.
Dalby was also subjected to a sexual harm prevention order and will be on the sex offenders' register for life.
