Cirencester Rapist
In March 2017, authorities uncovered disturbing evidence during a raid on the residence of Nicholas Blackwell, a 62-year-old delivery driver residing on North Home Road in Cirencester. The police, acting on intelligence regarding his suspected involvement in the possession and distribution of child pornography, executed a warrant to search his home. Upon their arrival, Blackwell was immediately candid, openly declaring to the officers, "I am a huge pervert."

The confession was made before the officers had even begun their search, highlighting his apparent lack of remorse or attempt to conceal his guilt, as noted by prosecutor Julian Kesner. The subsequent search uncovered a horrifying collection of digital media, including 227 videos classified at the most severe level of child exploitation. These videos depicted children as young as four being subjected to sexual assault, with a total viewing time approaching 92 hours. Such material is considered among the most heinous forms of child abuse content.

In addition to the videos, Blackwell possessed 34 Category B movies and 23 Category C movies, which are classified as less severe but still illegal. The police also found 67 images of extreme pornography involving animals engaged in sexual acts with humans. Prosecutor Kesner detailed that Blackwell admitted to downloading these illicit images for approximately ten years, engaging in this activity around the clock, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The police raid was prompted by reports that Blackwell was using peer-to-peer file-sharing networks to access and download indecent images. When officers arrived at his residence on August 26 of the previous year, he was fully aware of the reason for their visit. During the initial interaction, he openly stated, "Officers, I am a huge pervert. I have done this." His frank admission was seen as an indication of his awareness of the severity of his actions and his guilt.

Despite his immediate confession, Blackwell initially denied having any sexual interest in children during the court proceedings. His legal representative, Martin Steen, emphasized that Blackwell had always denied such interests but cooperated fully with police at the scene and was remarkably open about the duration of his offending behavior. The court heard that Blackwell's actions involved the rape of children, some as young as four, with images depicting both boys and girls aged between four and fifteen.

Judge Jamie Tabor QC questioned whether Blackwell still accepted his own description of being a "huge pervert." In response, Steen explained that Blackwell had been ambiguous during discussions with him but that a pre-sentence report indicated he posed a low risk of re-offending. Because Blackwell continued to deny his sexual interest in children, the probation service deemed him unsuitable for participation in an internet sex offender treatment program.

Ultimately, the judge decided to impose a sentence of 16 months in prison, suspended for two years, coupled with a requirement to participate in a 20-day 'cybersafe' rehabilitation program. Blackwell was also ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years, pay costs amounting to £500, and a surcharge of £140. The ruling aimed to balance punishment with the potential for rehabilitation, given his initial denial and the serious nature of his offenses.
