In July 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving Neil Williams, a man residing in Inverlair, Roy Bridge, who faced serious allegations related to the possession and distribution of explicit material involving minors and animals. The case was brought before Inverness Sheriff Court, where Williams, aged 55 and married, appeared to answer charges concerning his extensive collection of illicit images and videos.
It was revealed during the court proceedings that Williams had been engaged in this illegal activity over a period of more than six years, from January 2010 until August of the previous year. The authorities uncovered that he had downloaded a staggering total of 18,377 images and 509 videos containing indecent material involving children as young as five years old. These figures highlight the severity and prolonged nature of his offending.
In addition to the child exploitation content, Williams also admitted to possessing 808 images and 21 videos depicting explicit acts involving adults and animals. The court was informed that Williams has no children of his own, which was noted during the proceedings.
Following his admission, Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood decided to defer sentencing to allow for a comprehensive background report to be prepared. The sheriff issued a stern warning, stating, “Given the nature and number of images, all options are open to the court,” indicating the seriousness of the case and the potential for severe penalties.
Williams is scheduled to return to court on August 22 for sentencing. His defense solicitor, Hamish Melrose, is expected to speak on his behalf during that hearing. As part of the legal process, Williams was immediately placed on the Sex Offender’s Register, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the ongoing monitoring that will follow.
