NATHAN RAMSBOTTOM FROM ECCLEFECHAN JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN KIRKCUDBRIGHT
In September 2010, Nathan Ramsbottom, a 36-year-old resident of High Street, Ecclefechan, was sentenced to a significant prison term after being found guilty of possessing a large collection of indecent images of children. The court proceedings revealed that Ramsbottom had accumulated more than 1,700 illicit photographs depicting minors as young as two years old on his personal laptop computer. This disturbing discovery led to his conviction and subsequent sentencing.Ramsbottom had initially denied any involvement in taking or allowing the photographs to be captured at his residence in June 2007. He claimed that the images were solely for research purposes related to the exploitation of children, a defense that was ultimately rejected by the court. The authorities, during their investigation, uncovered the extensive collection of illegal material stored on his device, which included 1,777 indecent images of children and 17 indecent movies featuring over 200 young girls aged between three and sixteen.
The case was heard at Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court, where Sheriff George Jamieson expressed serious concerns about the potential risk Ramsbottom posed to the community. The court was informed that there was a 'high risk' of Ramsbottom reoffending, prompting the judge to impose strict restrictions on his future conduct. Ramsbottom was sentenced to three years in prison, with an additional two years on license following his release. Furthermore, the court banned him from using the internet and ordered him to be registered on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.
In addition to these measures, Sheriff Jamieson mandated that Ramsbottom should have no contact with any children under the age of 16. He was prohibited from being in the company of minors unless accompanied by an adult, emphasizing the court's commitment to safeguarding children from potential harm. The court's decision underscored the importance of protecting vulnerable minors, with the sheriff stating that children must be shielded wherever they are.
During the proceedings, Ramsbottom was also cleared of a separate charge related to attempting to pervert the course of justice. This charge stemmed from his contesting deportation efforts at Montreal International Airport in Canada on 11 November of the previous year. Additionally, he was cleared of applying for a passport on 9 November last year, having previously been granted bail at Dumfries Sheriff Court under the condition that he refrain from such applications.
Sheriff Jamieson concluded his remarks by condemning Ramsbottom's lack of remorse and reaffirming the law's role in protecting children. He emphasized that individuals who exploit or possess images of minors must face appropriate punishment to ensure their safety and well-being. The court's verdict reflects a firm stance against child exploitation and highlights the ongoing efforts to combat such heinous crimes.
