MITCHELL CASS OF FRIZINGTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN CUMBRIA
In May 2019, Mitchell Cass, a 23-year-old man from Frizington, Cumbria, was sentenced to six years in prison after it emerged he had planned to watch a baby being sexually abused. Cass had exchanged online messages with what he believed was a fellow paedophile, but was actually an undercover police officer. He traveled to Lancaster believing he would meet the individual and a baby in a hotel, but was arrested upon arrival. At Carlisle Crown Court, Cass pleaded guilty to multiple sexual offences. Authorities discovered hundreds of illegal images of children on his electronic devices, as well as other incriminating online conversations. Judge Peter Davies described the evidence as the "tip of the iceberg," noting it was gathered over a month.
Cass, who resides on Yeathouse Road, admitted during police interviews to viewing indecent images and participating in disturbing online discussions for six years. He also confessed to attempting to arrange or facilitate the commission of a child sex offence and encouraging or assisting in such offences, believing they would be carried out. Additionally, he admitted to making and distributing indecent images.
Earlier, in March 2019, Cass appeared before North and West Cumbria Magistrates Court in Carlisle, where he pleaded guilty to five charges relating to the distribution and creation of indecent images of children. Court documents indicated approximately 1,686 images were involved.
The prosecutor, Pam Fee, revealed that the distribution offences involved a two-week-old baby. The charges included three counts of making an indecent image of a child—covering 536 images classified as Category A, which depict the most serious abuse such as rape and torture of children—and 394 images in Category B, along with 756 images in Category C. These offences are believed to have occurred on or before November 8, 2018.
Further charges covered Cass’s involvement, between November 3 and 6, 2018, in distributing a number of indecent images of children. The offences took place in Frizington, West Cumbria. Cass, currently in custody, was remanded until his next court appearance at Carlisle Crown Court on March 7 for sentencing.
