WEST HAMPSTEAD TEEN SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS FOR RAPE AND ATTEMPTED MURDER IN HAMPSTEAD CEMETERY
A teenager named Miles Edward Hughes from Dynham Road was sentenced to 17 years in prison for a horrific attack in Hampstead Cemetery.The incident involved Hughes meeting a 15-year-old girl he knew, sitting and talking with her before pulling out a Stanley knife and injuring her arms.
He also carved his name "Miles" into her skin.
Hughes expressed that he enjoyed seeing her begging on her knees.
Following the violence, he demanded sex; when the victim refused, he forcibly raped her and tried to stab her in the neck.
The attack was interrupted when a member of the public intervened, forcing Hughes to climb over a fence and flee before being caught by police.
The girl sustained minor wounds.
Hughes was found guilty of attempted murder and rape at the Old Bailey on January 12 and was subsequently sentenced on the same day to 17 years for attempted murder and 8 years for rape, to be served concurrently.
He was also ordered to sign the Sexual Offenders Register for life.
Det Con Gary Fernon of the Met’s Sexual Offences Exploitation & Child Abuse Command stated that Hughes was a dangerous young man and praised the victim’s bravery in testifying.
The case highlights the severity of the crime and the justice served.
