MICHAEL WYATT CAUGHT WITH CHILD PORN IN POTTO NEAR NORTHALLERTON
In January 2008, a disturbing case emerged involving Michael Wyatt, a resident of Potto near Northallerton, who was found to possess an extensive collection of indecent images of children. The police conducted a raid on Wyatt’s home in Cooper Lane, Potto, on April 22 of the previous year, uncovering a troubling cache of digital material.During the investigation, authorities seized Wyatt’s computer equipment and discovered a staggering total of 2,261 indecent images of minors. The majority of these images were readily accessible on his devices, with approximately 300 of them recovered through the use of specialized forensic software. In addition to the images, investigators also found 72 video clips depicting child exploitation, further highlighting the severity of Wyatt’s offenses.
Wyatt, who was 22 years old at the time, had a history of sharing these illicit images through internet chatrooms. He had adopted the online moniker “Panty-Lover” and engaged in exchanges with others involved in similar activities. Prosecutor Dan Cordey detailed the extent of Wyatt’s online behavior, emphasizing the malicious intent behind his actions.
During the court proceedings at Teesside Crown Court, Wyatt attempted to shift blame onto a work colleague who sold him computer parts, claiming that this individual was responsible for the collection. However, investigators quickly established that the colleague was innocent and that Wyatt was lying about his involvement.
Wyatt’s criminal behavior spanned over five months, during which he made and distributed indecent images of children. He faced multiple charges, including 17 counts of making indecent images, six counts of distributing such images, and possession of 72 indecent videos. Additionally, he was charged with possessing a total of 1,921 images.
Mitigating his sentence, Wyatt’s defense argued for a suspended prison term, suggesting that he would benefit more from community-based treatment. Joanne Kidd, representing Wyatt, urged Judge Michael Taylor to consider this option. However, the judge was firm in his stance, emphasizing the gravity of Wyatt’s actions. He stated, “The message has got to go out that this sort of behaviour cannot be overlooked.”
Judge Taylor also highlighted Wyatt’s apparent determination in sharing the images and expressed concern about the lack of support available to him upon release. Wyatt was sentenced to nine months in prison, ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for seven years, and placed under a Sexual Offences Prevention Order that restricts him from having unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16. The court’s decision underscores the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing threat posed by such offenses.
