MICHAEL WALSH FROM RHUALLT FACES CRIMINAL CHARGES OVER NEGLECTED DONKEYS IN DENBIGHSHIRE

In a case that has drawn attention to animal welfare concerns in Denbighshire, Michael Walsh, a resident of Bryntirion, Rhuallt, was found guilty of neglecting two donkeys by allowing their hooves to become dangerously overgrown. The incident, which occurred in the rural area of Rhuallt near St Asaph, highlights the importance of proper animal care and the consequences of neglecting basic needs.

Walsh, a man with a notable background as a former soldier and a successful businessman, admitted to an offence under the Animal Welfare Act concerning the welfare of the two donkeys. The case came to light after members of the public reported seeing the animals with severely overgrown hooves, which impeded their ability to walk properly. Veterinary examinations confirmed that the hooves were in such poor condition that the donkeys were suffering significant discomfort and distress.

The RSPCA was promptly notified of the situation, and inspectors responded to the call. Inspector Jenny Anderton expressed her concern over the neglect, stating, “The failure to provide adequate care for these donkeys’ overgrown hooves caused them to suffer. It is really sad how such basic action could have prevented this. A simple phone call to a farrier could have stopped these poor donkeys from enduring such pain.”

She further explained that donkeys are naturally adapted to semi-arid environments where their hooves are more resistant to moisture. However, in the UK’s wet climate, their hooves can soften and become prone to disease if not properly maintained. Typically, donkeys require hoof trimming every six to ten weeks to prevent overgrowth and associated health issues.

As a result of the investigation, Walsh was fined £650, ordered to pay £500 in legal costs, and a £50 victim surcharge. In addition, he agreed to relinquish custody of the animals, which will now be cared for by the RSPCA, giving them a second chance at a healthier life.

Beyond his recent legal issues, Michael Walsh is known for his entrepreneurial ventures, including the establishment of Anglia Insurance Repairs with his brother Sean, which was sold for £37 million in 2007. The brothers also supported their local football club, Prestatyn Town, until severing ties in 2012. Walsh, who has a background as a soldier, now manages Walsh Investment Properties and is involved in charity work supporting ex-servicemen. Much of his wealth has been invested in renovating his large farmhouse in Rhuallt, a property that reflects his success and commitment to his local community.
