DEVON CAREGIVER SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR MURDER OF ELDERLY WOMAN
Michael Robinson, aged 35, was found guilty of murdering Carol Hart, a 77-year-old resident of Northam, Devon.Court proceedings revealed that Robinson carried out a violent, drug-influenced assault on Mrs Hart after he was suspended from his caregiving role due to allegations of theft.
Over a period of five weeks, he embezzled £5,650 from her by using her bank card, which she later discovered, leading her to report him to authorities.
In response, Robinson broke into her home in the early hours of January 11 with the intent to silence her, resulting in her death.
During sentencing, Mr Justice Garnham described Robinson as 'merciless' and stated that his motive was to hinder the police investigation into his theft.
Robinson received a life sentence with a minimum term of 30 years before he could apply for parole.
It was highlighted that his criminal behavior was fueled by cocaine addiction and gambling, with the stolen money spent on these vices.
Mrs Hart’s family expressed profound grief; her daughter Clare Geering criticized Robinson, saying, 'He stole that chance,' and shared her longing for reconciliation with her mother.
Law enforcement described the assault as 'vicious and cowardly,' condemning Robinson's betrayal of Mrs Hart’s trust, especially given her affection for him, which was ultimately shattered by violence and theft.
