In January 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Michael Moran, an 83-year-old man from Carlow, who has a dark history of heinous sexual offenses against young relatives. Despite serving a prison sentence of just seven years for the serial rape of his niece and grandniece, Moran has publicly displayed a disturbing attitude, openly expressing his satisfaction with his time behind bars.

On a seemingly ordinary Wednesday, Moran was seen walking along the backroads of Oldtown, Nurney in Carlow. He appeared to be the picture of innocence, supported by two walking sticks that he claimed were provided to him during his incarceration. With a cheerful smile and a polite gesture to passing motorists, Moran projected an image of a harmless elderly man. However, this facade starkly contrasts with the reality of his past crimes.

When approached by a journalist, Moran confirmed his identity with a simple, “I am.” The reporter then asked if he had any message for the children he had abused. Moran’s response was dismissive: “There wouldn’t be much I’d say,” he replied. “But I had a good old time in there. They looked after me well. The nurses and the officers were very fond of me. They had a great laugh with me and everything. By God, you can tell them that from me if you’re talking to them. Because I’d never say a word wrong you see… as long as I was in there.”

He further added that he was glad to be back home, mentioning that he had undergone hip surgery while in prison and was given walking sticks upon release. When questioned about his previous claims during court proceedings, where he suggested that his victims had “instigated intercourse,” Moran insisted that this was the truth, despite the clear evidence to the contrary. When asked if he regretted his actions, Moran’s response was somewhat remorseful, “Oh God, I do. I am terrible sorry. It’ll never happen again… I was 83 there at Christmas.”

Details of Moran’s crimes were revealed during his sentencing at the Central Criminal Court in November 2015. He pleaded guilty to multiple charges of rape involving his niece and grandniece, with the offenses spanning from the early 1980s to the late 2000s. The older victim, now 41, recounted that Moran had raped her regularly, starting when she was just eight years old, and had threatened to do the same to her intellectually disabled sister if she refused his advances. She described specific incidents of abuse within the family home and detailed Moran’s threats and manipulations to silence her.

The younger victim, now 23, also testified that Moran began abusing her when she was 11, often giving her money after the assaults and threatening her with violence if she disclosed the abuse. Both victims expressed their pain and anger, with the older woman stating in her victim impact statement that Moran had robbed her of her youth and innocence. The younger victim echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that her childhood was stolen from her and that she would never regain it.

During the court proceedings, a garda (police officer) read from the victims’ statements, highlighting the profound impact Moran’s actions had on their lives. The court heard that Moran’s behavior left the victims feeling dirty and terrified, with the older woman fearing that Moran would harm her sister if she tried to resist.

Justice Margaret Heneghan sentenced Moran to ten years in prison, with the final three years suspended on certain conditions. The case remains a stark reminder of the devastating effects of child sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims.
