MICHAEL MCGLYNN FROM BANNOCKBURN SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN EDINBURGH

Michael McGlynn, a man previously known as a schoolteacher and swimming coach from Bannockburn, has been handed down a prison sentence of three years and ten months after being found guilty of sexually abusing six young girls over a period spanning more than two decades. The disturbing pattern of his predatory behavior began in 1984 and continued until 2005, leaving a trail of trauma and suffering among his victims.

During the trial at the Edinburgh High Court, Lady Ross publicly acknowledged the courage displayed by the women who testified against McGlynn. She praised their bravery, stating, 'They came to court as adult women and they spoke with clarity and courage about things that happened to them many years ago but things that were distressing and painful.' Her comments underscored the enduring impact of McGlynn’s actions and the importance of their testimonies in seeking justice. Lady Ross also emphasized the significant and lasting consequences of his offending, remarking, 'This offending has had real and lasting consequences and it has taken bravery for all of these women to speak up now.'

Addressing McGlynn directly, the judge noted his age—73 years old—and remarked that his past crimes had finally caught up with him. Despite the gravity of the charges, McGlynn maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, a stance that drew criticism from the presiding judge. The judge pointed out, 'You continue to deny responsibility for these offences,' highlighting the defendant’s refusal to accept accountability.

The court heard how McGlynn’s abuse inflicted severe harm on his victims. One particular victim was so profoundly affected that she ceased attending school altogether and missed her exams, illustrating the profound and lasting damage caused by his actions. While the court did not classify his offenses as the most severe form of sexual abuse, it recognized that he exploited his trusted position as an educator, which left the court with no choice but to impose a custodial sentence.

Initially, McGlynn faced 14 charges, but after the trial, he was ultimately convicted of six counts. These included two counts of indecent assault against older teenage girls and four counts of lewd and indecent conduct towards younger girls aged between 12 and 15. The majority of the abuse took place at a secondary school located in Stirlingshire, where McGlynn was employed.

In his defense, Sarah Livingstone argued that McGlynn was a first-time offender and maintained his innocence. However, following his conviction, the court ordered that McGlynn be registered as a sex offender indefinitely. Additionally, the judge issued non-harassment orders to prevent him from having any contact with the victims, aiming to protect them from further harm and ensure their safety moving forward.
